Do clean your cutting and cooking areas often, especially after cutting or preparing things like fish, chicken, or pork.

Don't put anything metal in your microwave.

Do be sure that you have the correct ingredients before you start.

Don't be afraid to experiment a little with ingredients once you have started getting the hang of things. You can replace water with tomato juice to cook rice for example, if you want to make a more pronounced flavor.

Do make sure that you know the difference between tablespoon (tbsp) and teaspoon (tsp) in a recipe or you may be in for a surprise.

Don't leave a pot or pan cooking on the stove unattended. It takes literally seconds for it to start boiling over or to catch fire.

I would suggest getting the FoodTV channel or watching some food shows to get tricks on how to cook certain meals. Half the recipes on those shows I would likely not eat because they contain ingredients the average household would not use except for special occasions (truffles? duck confit?) but they will often have little tips and tricks that you can pick up from them.

Some good down to earth chefs include Emeril Legasse and Jamie Oliver. They both have shows as well as cookbooks available.

read the direction at least 2 time before you make anything and if you blow air into the shake and bake bag it's easier to shake other than that you'd have to ask a more specific question.
