I am a vet tech in california. It sounds to me like he may have whats called an aural hematoma, thats when they rupture some of the blood vessels in there pinna. sometomes they can be caused by ear infections, the dog will shake there head due to the infection and the hematoma happens. You should bring him to the vet the can be very painful and it should be repaired, if you choose not tohave it repaired if will go away on it own it will just become what is called cauliflower ear ( scar tissue) and his will be hard and thickened, the main thing is to find out what the primary reason is first ( ear infection, etc)

She likely needs to have it drained by the vet. the vet will also determine the cause for her excessive head shaking or scratching that caused the swelling in the first place..This is a pocket of blood, from capillaries that have ruptured..Like a nose bleed without an outlet..It is called a hematoma..
If she will help still for an icepack, that will relive the pain somewhat, but I would just keep her calm until the vet takes care of it..
You can safely give her Chamomile tea to keep her from head-shaking or stressing with it..
Dump the tea out of the teabag, and mix it with small amount of some food she really likes..1 teaspoon for a small breed, up to a tablespoon for a large breed.. this will relax her, and calm the painful nerve endings..
Here is what Dr. Mike, DVM says about several ear hematomas> http://www.vetinfo.com/dhematoma.html

Take your dog to the vet ASAP. If it is a hemotoma (spelling) a.k.a. boxer's ear, then you only have 24 hours to have it drained. After that it stays and the ear can become deformed permanently. I have 4 cats and 2 of them had this happen and I didn't know what it was until it was too late. It's not life threatening but it makes the ear crinkle around the swelling. Also, it could be an infection of some kind and infections in the ear need to be drained. Good luck!

She needs ear meds from the vet.Follow directions. He may also give you an ear cleaner along with the ear drops. This often happens to a dog that has a narrow ear canal making it hard for it to air out.Let the vet show you how to clean the ear & keep up with it or it will come back.It is fairly common.

Does your dog have a history of ear infections? Has she been shaking her head a lot lately? If so, she may have a hematoma (like a big bruise between the skin of her ear). The blood needs to be drained by a Veterinarian.

she may have gotten bitten by a snake. My dogs had that one time and we gave her some milk. Not to say that is what you should give your dog but best thing is to take him/her to the vet.
