They take swabs like a pap smear, those are sometimes uncomfortable, but shouldn't hurt. The best thing to do is just relax. They also take blood for some. If you've never given blood it's like a little pinch when the needle goes in, and somewhat annoying while you are waiting for the vials to fill up. Nothing really painful though. They also do ultrasounds, sometimes you have to drink a lot and can't pee so that your bladder is full and they can get a better picture, which is hell when you are far along and they(or the baby) are pressing on your bladder. And urine tests, all you have to do is pee in a cup. Those are the things that they have to do for the standard tests that everyone gets. As far as the other tests like amniocentesis, I have never been through anything besides routine tests, so i don't know.

The only way I know of for a prenatal paternity test is by amnioscentisis. The Dr inserts a long needle through your abdomen into the uterus and withdraws some of the amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby. This fluid contains some of the babie's DNA (it's mostly used to check for genetic disorders like Downs Syndrome) and could be used for a paternity test. It would probably hurt like hell, and is a very risky procedure to both baby and mother. It's rare, but it is possible for the Dr to miss and hit the baby with the needle and that can do serious damage. I've also heard of the needle missing the uterus, puncturing the intestine and the mother having very serious infections. I don't know that a Dr would be willing to do it for just a paternity test.

If not 100% nessecary, wait until the baby is born, then it's a simple blood test and doesn't carry all these scary possibilites.

Hurt who? You or your baby? Could you wait until the baby is born?
