It's unsettling to be traveling in a vehicle in cramped quarters beyond your control, whether on the ground or in the air. Primordially we are best suited for propelling ourselves on our own two feet, making constant contact with our surroundings. But this is the Modern Age, for better or worse. Apart from the usual yet sensible advice given, might I suggest something somewhat unorthodox yet gentle: EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique. It involves a gentle combination of tapping certain pressure points on the face & body with the fingers, eye movements, and affirmations. The instructions are contained in a .pdf on the website below. It just might be the trick to sidestep your phobia once and for all. Give it a whirl.

I can so relate to what you are saying. I used to be that same way. To the point that I've driven 1,000 miles instead of flying!

A few things that have helped me are ....
1) place your feet on the metal part of the seat in front of you - not on the floor - that way you do not feel the movement quiet so much.
2) sit where you can see the flight attendants easily. It helped my fears when I would them going about "business as usual".
3) as soon as you get on - ask for a pillow (two if possible) and a blanket. Having those is sort of like a security blanket. Should you want to lay your head on the wall - you don't feel the vibrations so much.
4) take something to occupy your mind. A crossword puzzle, newspaper, magazine ....
5) there is nothing wrong with having a drink in the air - if you're not driving on the other end.
6) someone mentioned Nyquil .... even Benedryl might make you drowsy
7) for me - it is a great help when the captain announces that there might be or will be turbulance ahead. Just knowing they are prepared for it - makes me feel better. That way I know they are not caught off guard. Silly - but helps me just the same. That's when I look for the flight attendant to see what they're doing.
8) Sit near the back where if you need to go the restroom - it's nearby.

Believe it or not - I now fall asleep before we take off.

Good luck. and I hope this helps.

My friend had what seemed like a fear of flying and then realised that it was based in awe - that the take off in such a huge and at the same time flimsy beast was overwhelming to think about. I think this a little too - My father was a pre-war pilot and I look at those old spitfires at the Biggin Hill airfield and just feel awe. I have a thought every time I fly that we could end up crashing - then I make a pact with myself that i will do my best to survive if there is any hope at all - and then positively give up to it - I could die at any time - airplane travel is relatively safe and I am heartened by the recent crash of the airplane on landing where no one was hurt. It is the same as getting on a bus or in a car with another driver or crossing the road. So I guess I have the fear and talk to it.

I would suggest that you bring an ipod or some sort of music to listen to on the aircraft. Your just need to get you mind off of the flight and if you have something to focus on like music or a laptop, etc... that helps to keep you more comfortable and thinking of other things. Also know that flying is very safe these days, I am sure you will have a great trip!

Depending on the length of your flight, you might want to take some Nyquil that will make you sleep easier.
If its a shorter flight, bring some music along..whatever relaxes you the most. Just breathe when you feel nervous, chat with the other passengers (you will find a lot of people are still afraid to fly) and remember that turbulence is completely normal.

There is nothing to worry about. You'll only be 37,000 feet up! That's only 7 miles high! If the plane crashes, you'll only have about 40 seconds to think about your death. The temperature outside the aircraft will only be minus 50 degress so if there is a catestrophic failure of the skin, you'll freeze instantly! They're not checking Mohammid for fear of offending islam but, granny was checked, thank god for that! There's not nearly the amount of bacteria and/or viruses from the other passengers recirculating in the cabin as people have said.

Enjoy your flight!
