Precordial activity refers to the movement of the chest wall when the heart beats. When the heart beats it pushes against the rib cage and diaphragm in a certain way. An experienced health care provider can often tell by palpating (touching) for the apex (pointed end) of the heart, whether there is enlargement, disease, damage, and to what extent. Terms such as lifts, heaves, and thrills are used when notating location and duration of the movement. An easy to understand example might be that the apex of the heart can be felt lower or more to the right in a patient with an enlarged heart, than one with a normal heart. Precordial activity by itself isn't a term that means there is anything wrong. All hearts have precordial activity.
