put some alcohol on the area to wet the hair and move it away from the tick. grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, and pull it straight up. it will probably bleed for a bit. ticks do not have a removeable head that will stay in the skin...they do have a probosis (sp?) (miniscule sucker) that can sometimes stay in the skin, but will work it's way out as the tick bite heals. keep the area clean with a betadine solution, or chlorhexadine (get it at walmart or walgreen's in the first aid dept) it will probably scab over in a day or two. just keep an eye on it to make sure it's not getting infected.
****there are a lot of answers here that are seriously not correct...ticks do not have teeth, they do not have a removeable head, they do not have legs that will go into the skin. geez. you can even go to the pet store and buy a tick remover. it's like a spoon, with a small slot in it. you slip it under the tick, and scoop it off.

Check out this website for home remedies. The one that would probably work best on a cat is to cover the tick in nail polish so it suffocates, then pull it out with a pair of tweezers.
However, if you are two people, you can have someone hold the cat while you try the heated nail or recently extinguished match to "annoy" the tick out.
I also heard that ticks are not fond of garlic, so you may want to start feeding the cat garlic supplements in its food.

Do not use a lighter or your fingers. Using tweezers and trying not to crush it, pull it directly out. If you pull too hard or don't pull straight out, the head will stay in the skin. Wash your hands afterward and put the tick in an alcohol or 409 solution.
Do not put motor oil on your cat. The cat will lick it off and die. (That answer needs to be removed)

I agree with most light a match blow it out put it to the area in wich the tick lies this will make the tick back out. If you pull it you will leave part of the tick in the cat wich will cause infection or if the tick has lyme disease the cat will get that too. If you are too asqueamish eith your cat then please take it to the vet.

When my brother had a tick on him my mom grabbed her lighter and held it close to his skin. Not close enough to touch her actually hurt him, but enough where the tick feels uncomfortable because of the heat and leaves him. This might be a good thing to do with your cat, however it's also twice as dangerous because of all the hair. Bring your cat to the vet and ask them to remove it. :)

Try putting Vaseline on the tick, this may cause it to suffocate and fall off or not be hooked in. If it is in a place that the cat can lick off the Vaseline it may not work. You really should contact a Vet though.

Light a match and blow it out. While it's still hot, immediately after you blow it out. Touch it to the ticks behind. It will back out of the cat's skin. You may want to have someone help you hold the cat so you can hold the heated match steadily on the tick.

pour some rubbing alcohol over it and whenit cant breath itll let up and run for it... then you catch it and put it into an ash tray and put a lighter untilit bursts...then it is dead... but if you dont want to do this when the tick becomes 'full' it will come off by its self and go amoung its normal life until its becomes 'HUNGRY' again lmao sorry

If you want to get it out yourself, get a pair of tweezers and grip the tick, then pulling slightly, twist it counterclock wise while pulling just a little bit at a time, when they burrow in to the animal's flesh they turn in like a screw...
