If you can read the book and do it yourself in under three hours, you should. If you can't get it done in three hours, get some help. But check it over; it's your responsibility.

I would say if all you have for your personal US income taxes are wages, interest (income and mortgage), and a little investment activity, that you could spring for turbo tax or a similar product and spend 2-3 hours preparing your tax returns.

If you own a business or have significant investment activities, I would recommend using a CPA. You'll get your taxes done and should also be provided with some suggestions for safeguarding your assets and methods to minimize your taxes.

If you have a fairly simple return, wages, interest income and basic itemized deductions then a firm such as H&R is ok as long as you get someone with some experience. Foru weeks a intensive training doesn't qualify for much in tax prep.
If you have a business or are into more complicated matters I would seek better qualified people such as an enrolled agent or a CPA.

Well the first guy is just a moron. I work for H&R Block and we are not part timers. We MUST take so many class hours a year in order just to work the next year. We have to take so many class hours in order to get a higher certification level as well. We take all of our classes during our off season. We also have Tax update classes each year before the new season even starts.
Tax prep is complicated, but if you learn how to do it properly then it's a breeze.

All the answers so far assume personal income tax. Because this question is under Taxes -> United States, I will agree with the assumption you mean US taxes. If you mean Corporate taxes, or taxes other than income tax, none of them apply.

is a very complicated process and should not be left to just anyone, especially part-timers like H & R Block, et al.
