I don't think that you can get a passport in the US within 48 hours, you can expedite the process, but 48 hrs is pushing it. You can go to http://www.usps.com/ and you can apply online for the passport.

u have to call and make an appointment at one of the national passport agencies...hopefully you're close to one. if you can provide proper documentation that you have to travel within the next 14 days...along with documentation that you are indeed a US citizen then you can get one right away. call this number: 1-877-487-2778 and make an appointment. also check out http://travel.state.gov to get all of the documents that you will need to get a passport.
