It is two vertical lines that frame what looks like a plane flying towards you (a small circle in the centre with horizontally slanted wings coming out of it). I took a photo and it is posted here: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y28/burrwati/wtfnow.jpg

That is the symbol for the 'choke'.

It's a MkII Golf yeah? Guessing that the light comes on on cold mornings and goes out after a while. It's an system of increaseing the revs of the engine when cold, so that the car doesn't stall...

Its the tell-tale light for the choke (more technically known as the idle enrichment valve).

I'm assuming its not got a fuel-injected engine.
In cold weather it is often necessary to provide the engine with a little extra fuel to get it started and keep it running until the engine reaches its normal operating temperature. This is done by opening the "choke", letting more fuel into the engine. When you do this, the light will come on. When the engine has warmed up, you close the "choke" and the light goes out. The light is to remind you that you have opened it, as the engine will run less efficiently with it open once it has reached normal temperature.

With modern fuel-injected cars, this function is taken care of by the electronically-controlled injection system, so modern cars no longer have choke lights or levers.

The choke lever on this car is probably a pull-out type, located at the bottom of the dashboard, pretty much directly below the light you pictured. However, it could be that the choke is automatic, or that the car is injected, but that the same light panel was used as on versions of that car with a manual choke.
