He's 3 yrs old.
The problem is when I don't give him a nap whenever we leave the house after 3:00 pm he passes out in the car and then he goes to bed at like 11:00pm.
I try giving him naps at normal times like 1:00 or 2:00 but it is so hard to put him down it sometimes takes me an hour to put him down, it's quite nerve racking.
When he doesn't nap it's so easy, he falls asleep like 8:30 and sleeps for like 12 hours! I love it, but I hate hwen he falls asleep at around 4:00pm or 5:00pm, at 6:00pm one time!
What do I do

Keep him awake. If he falls asleep in the car, either dont go out after a certain time, or keep him awake with loud music or talking. If he falls asleep while you're driving, stop the car, get him up and awake, and then get back on the road.

This is just part of having kids... lol, they some times fall asleep at the most inconvenient times.

Try calling it "Quiet Time" instead of nap time. It seems crazy, but it works! Just tell him he has to lay still with his eyes closed for 10 minutes, and you'll let him know when the 10 minutes are up. He will be asleep within 5 minutes!

It really works!

And make sure Quiet Time is right after lunch. He's more likely to nap after a meal.

If he still needs a nap just let him have a nap. If you control the time of his naps you won't have him awake so late at night. It might be hard to get him to sleep in the afternoon but your alternatives don't seem to be working either. Or if he manages to sleep for 12hrs at a time and he sleeps at 6 pm then you will just have to get up earlier. (i wouldn't go for 4 or 5 am but 6 am isn't so bad)

You could try waking him up earlier in the morning, then try for the nap at say 12:00. If you need to, go for a noon car ride. Good Luck!

I'm going through this with my son, too. When mine falls asleep after 4 p.m., I give him 30 minutes and then I wake him up. He is grumpy for a while, but then he does go to bed close to the time that we want him to.

take him a ride earlier in the day. after a few days he may get used to napping at an earlier time. but nap are very important to growth and learning.
