40 dollars sounds very fair. That's about $10 an hour and is more than my boss pays the young man who paints our office building once a year.

If he painted for 4 hours and you paid him $40..that's $10 an hour. $10 an hour is a low wage these days. I would suggest paying him $15 per hour.
