redo ur sound installation from ur utilities cd

Try this first before you try the first suggestion

Right Click on the My COmputer Icon>Manage>Device Manager
if you see any yellow or red signs, Right click on it and click 'Update Driver'

it is likely that your driver got screwed up, it has happned to me before many times, and this fixes it always.

And this will only work in windows, no other OS.
