You hear correctly. I live for today-being as good of a person as I can. The rest will take care of itself. If there is a heaven, there is , If not, there's not. G-d will take care of it all.

I'm not personally Jewish but I have a deep interest in Judaism, particularly Kabbalah. From that research alone, I can tell you that this is very much true. As far as most Jewish sects are concerned, everything that is happening was created directly from G-D's own energy and since G-D cannot fail, all that energy, eventually, will return from whence it came. G-D chose the Jewish people, but everyone else still had their part to play.
In such an environment, where the afterlife is simply returning to the source, why worry about the afterlife? There's no hell, and unless you consider merging back with G-D to be heaven, there's really no heaven either (though it's possible one COULD consider that rejoining to be heaven, and a form of eternal life -- in that case, 100% of EVERYTHING, living and nonliving, ends up in heaven).

The Jews lived in a society that worshiped the afterlife the Egyptians. Just look at their greatest work the Pyramids.
The Jews had a natural advetion to this out of hate of Egyptian culture. That is why you find almost no reference to the afterlife in the Pentateuch and in general little in the Hebrew bible.
Jews have and do believe in an afterlife they just know from history that one can become fixated on it and stop caring about this life.

Your answers seem to be unanimous -- we do not focus on the afterlife, although many of us do believe that all the righteous of the nations have a share in the world to come. A common misconception of Christians is that our afterlife is limited to Jews. There is no common belief in Judaism about the aferlife, because there is nothing written about it and no evidence of it. No one has been there and returned to tell us about it. "Belief" is secondary in Judaism -- we are judged on "actions," not what's "in our heart."

Basically, that's true. The vast majority of the 613 commandments (and the details of those commandments) incumbent on the Jewish nation, deal with how we live in this world. The understanding is, the better we live in this world, according to the Law, the better our 'world to come' will be.
And when one truly learns the ins and outs of the Law, it's a very good way to live.
