Ive spoken to people of many different Christian sects and Ive spoken with many Priests and Preachers. The Clergy have said that the bible is to not be taken literally and yet the masses believe it all to be true. Why?

Firstly I think your question is slightly misleading, "most people" do not believe in the Bible let alone take it as literal. Within the Christan community I think that the basic tenants of Christianity are regarded as enough i.e do unto others as would be done to you, it is a small but vocal and powerful minority that are fanatical (the same is true of Islam and there is interesting parells). There is also quite a difference between the European (where I live) views and some of the more evangelistic US versions. I think the fanatics that preach literal interpretations (although missing out all the bits they don't agree with) do so as a means of social control, to gain political power and make money. But I also think that peole like this, Father K above makes a very valid point; when the Church of Rome was supreme people where able to follow i's rules and doctroines without question. When the reforamation came along and removed that, humanity lost some of its certainty in life, we as a society became lost; there was no objective truth in the world anymore. we have been trying to get back to that certainity ever since, with some of the more fundamental christains this had been be adpoting The Bible as a literal infaliable truth (Father K's "Paper Pope". there is a famous painting of Martin Luther overlooking a church and crying out "My God what have I done", a question Protestants have struggled with, to replace the security of the Papacy they have put their faith in The Bible

I think there's a difference between literal fact and Truth. The Bible I'm sure has very many literal facts....but also there are things that are not meant to be taken as literal facts that still convey the Truth of God. Some people have trouble knowing that there even IS a difference....

Because modern Protestantism has set up a "paper pope" without realizing it. They need something to be "infallible" or their religion falls apart. This is the fallacy of "sola Scriptura". Always has been.

Scripture, Tradition and reason...these three are needed in order to fully understand. Protestants throw out the baby with the bathwater...and they suffer from then attempting to make the allegorical literal.

It's actually painful for some of us Christians to watch. But - that's life.

I think the masses enjoy thinking of the world as a mystical and magical place.

This is the very reason the electoral college is such a splendid idea. The masses can be quite frightening at times and I will hear no more on the matter from a certain Mr. John Adams and his harridan wife Abigail!

The Bible is the complete, inerrant word of God and is to be taken literally in the original languages.

I pray for the clergy and priests that you have spoken to if what you say is true, then they are wrong.

The clerics you spoke to are as blind as the blind they lead.

Genesis 1 thru 11 lay the groundwork for the entire structure of society and the church, without which, the rest of the bible is meaningless. This is the foundation that we accept literally.
Man was created, he fell into a death-state of sin, God provides a promise of redemption through a seed that would come.

We will not compromise truth.

How do "the clergy" know? Some is literal and some is written in figurative language. (see Revelations)

You make a generalization that is not supported by any facts or statistics. Therefore, the only purpose to your inquiry must be to sow the seeds of hatred and rancor towards Christians and other people of faith. Shame on you.

LOL
Because they are uneducated. I seriously think that one solution to world peace is to educate the public, especially on the different religions. I mean, most wars are because of hunger, prejudice, lack of knowledge, correct? So, educate people and feed them.

Some people hate uncertainty. They would prefer to hold on to something of specious credulity, rather than deal with not being certain.

Sad, but true.
