I was diagnosed with clinical depression and OCD about five years ago. I've gone through periods using SSRIs and periods without. I am currently switching from taking Effexor XR to Wellbutrin XL. The Effexor made me fatigued all the time, caused me to gain and hold onto weight---so I needed to switch. I'm curious to know people's reactions to Wellbutrin, especialy regarding their weight, and if anyone has noticed a difference between Wellbutrin XL and Wellbutrin SR. Thanks!

Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride) is a multiple reuptake inhibitor used to treat clinical depression. Wellbutrin is also a popular drug used to counter the side effects of other medications, such as sexual dysfunction, low energy levels and weight gain.

Bupropion It is a chemical derivative of diethylpropion, an amphetamine-like substance used to lose weight.

I'm scheduled to start Wellbutrin next week and I've done a pleathora of research on the MRI's and spoke to many people using Effexor and Wellbutrin - and people seem to be very pleased with Wellbutrin and my pDOC has had a lot of success with it with her other patients.

I've heard some real horror stories about trying to get off of Effexor, as it is known to be the hardest antidepressant to get off of with the harshest withdrawal syndrom.

Good luck and I hope you have a smooth transition.

SR you usually take twice a day, XL is usually once. The biggest difference for me is I very often forgot my second dose, so since switching to XL I have a much steadier medication level.
I've been on Wellbutrin for about 8 years and have had almost no side effects from it. It's been the best antidepressant I've tried (and I've tried A LOT of them.) The only side effects I have had from it were loss of appetite in the very beginning of being on it and hot flashes when I went up to the highest suggested dose of 450 mg. At 300 mg daily, I do fine on it. I think it's a really good medication.
