You are right, 6000 years old, but it doesnt say it in the Bible. You can work it out according to the ages of the people, like Adam, Set, Noah, etc. There were a couple of scientists that worked out that 2024 the earth will be 6000years old. Dont know if its true

The bible does not state anywhere that the earth is 6000 years old.

That date was developed by a christian monk during the 17th century based on his interpretation of the geneaologies layed out in the bible.

All science points to an earth greater then 4 billion years old.

The oldest rocks which have been found so far (on the Earth) date to about 3.8 to 3.9 billion years ago (by several radiometric dating methods). Some of these rocks are sedimentary, and include minerals which are themselves as old as 4.1 to 4.2 billion years. Rocks of this age are relatively rare, however rocks that are at least 3.5 billion years in age have been found on North America, Greenland, Australia, Africa, and Asia.

While these values do not compute an age for the Earth, they do establish a lower limit (the Earth must be at least as old as any formation on it). This lower limit is at least concordant with the independently derived figure of 4.55 billion years for the Earth's actual age.

I'll go with that.

4,600,000,000 years. Give or take a fortnight.

Hello Saige, this is going to be one of those occasions when you learn something about your religion from an atheist who knows more about it than you do. It says nowhere in the bible that the earth is 6000 years old. Find it if you don't believe me. That date was calculated by an Irish cleric in the 17th century. It was a magnificent feat of mathematics and depended on the man's enormous reading of Roman and Greek histories. I won't tell you his name because if you're serious about spouting this kind of stuff you should go to the trouble to find out important facts like that for yourself. And as he was only a MAN, he is resumably as reliable as the men who date the Earth using silly old techniques like radioactive isotope decay. Or the men who wrote the bible, for that matter. Hope this helps.

Science has estimated about 6 billion years. That is not out of sync with the Genesis account in Chapter 1--simply because the account deals with preparing of the earth for habitation.

You are correct in one sense , humans have been on the earth for about 6,000 years that is according to accurate history of the written genealogy. With pre-historic we have nothing written to corroborate that humans lived any longer. Please note:

*** ce chap. 7 p. 97 "Ape-Men"-What Were They? ***

For example, in The Fate of the Earth we read: "Only six or seven thousand years ago . . . civilization emerged, enabling us to build up a human world."

*** ce chap. 7 p. 98 "Ape-Men"-What Were They? ***

41 In this regard, note what Nobel prize winning nuclear physicist W. F. Libby, one of the pioneers in radiocarbon dating, stated in Science: "The research in the development of the dating technique consisted of two stages-dating of samples from the historical and the prehistorical epochs, respectively. Arnold [a co-worker] and I had our first shock when our advisers informed us that history extended back only for 5000 years. . . . You read statements to the effect that such and such a society or archaeological site is 20,000 years old. We learned rather abruptly that these numbers, these ancient ages, are not known accurately."

Billions and billions of years. There is NO PLACE in the Bible that says 6000 years, OR 4004 BC. That's just interpretation and guesswork.

We're not entirely sure. The oldest rock outcropping on the planet is in Australia and if I recall correctly dates to 4.5 Billion years old. Figure anywhere from 5.5 billion to 4.5 billion then.

"The generally accepted age for the Earth and the rest of the solar system is about 4.55 billion years (plus or minus about 1%). This value is derived from several different lines of evidence."

Scientific evidence currently available leads geologists to estimate that the Earth is 4.57 billion years old.

Billions of years old. The "days" referred to in the creation story are metaphors for eons of time.
