Calorie restriction is the key...however you don't want to feel hungry while on your "diet" so it's best to fill up on foods that are not dense in calories
Try 'counting' your calories on a daily basis to avoid going over your daily caloric expenditure
www.calorie-count.com is a great site for evaluating meals
eat lots of vegetables, try to stay away from sweet fruits, and 'white' foods like white flour, white rice, white sugar, . restrict or eliminate dairy products and oils and butters.
eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day so instead of having three large meals, have five to six smaller ones instead..but remember to watch your calories.
Water melon, grapefruit, and apples are great snacks
choose lighter calorie desserts like jello if you must have dessert and drink lots of water
Try to reduce the amount of meat you eat (especially deli meats) and if you consume chicken and turkey, eat from the breast which is the leanest part of the bird.

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.

I don't think a "good" diet really exists, but I do agree with the others that lowering your caloric intake and just moving around more will help. I joined Curves 2 months ago and although I've only lost 5 lbs I've lost 3 inches around my waist and hips and increased my calve muscles by 1/2 inch. I go 5 days a week for just 30 minutes. Go onto www.oprah.com and join the group! Also, consider becoming vegetarian for a few weeks. I promise you'll see the pounds come off if you do it right! If you REALLY need to lose weight in a hurry, become vegan.

Boiled eggs and water.Sounds icky but it will take off the weight fast.of couse this is a crash diet and you should't stay on it very long.
