we are getting a three month old male kitten and I would like to get him fixed, as our neighbors have several female cats, and neither of us want more kittens.
I was wondering if there might be some service to fix the cats for free, My hubby doesn't want to invest alot of money in this cat, but wants it fixed.
Also what age would be good to get him fixed?

Thanks

Talk to your vet or local shelter - neutering a male is generally less expensive than spaying a female, so that's at least a bonus. Your vet or shelter should know if there are any low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the area.

Bravo to you for being responsible and getting him neutered!!!

Cats are generally neutered/spayed at 6 months of age. Shelters will do it earlier as this is a nice incentive when adopting.

There may be a low cost spay/neuter clinic in your area. You can call an animal shelter and see if they know of any vets in the town that do low cost neutering. Generally, neutering is a lot less expensive than spaying a female, so I would even call a vet to see what he charges.

You'll be investing alot of money in this animal if you choose to adopt him, you'll have vaccinations and miscellaneous vet bills through his life, neutering is just the beginning. Keeping him in is a good idea too, a lot more healthier for all involved.

Good luck.

Make the appointment now, and do as the others have said, finding out about low cost neuter programs. Most places would be glad to help if they can, to prevent your kitten from contributing to many litters of kittens. You could be responsible for that and you do not want angry pet owners at your doorstep. Plus if you are not breeding your animal, you should have them fixed to help with their temperament. The last thing you want is your male cat escaping every time you open the door in search of the scent of a female cat in heat....

While I don't want to seem unkind I have to ask the question If your husband does not want to invest a lot of money in the cat then why are you adopting it in the first place? Having a pet is an expensive responsibility that goes far beyond simply spaying/neutering. Please educate yourself about the needs and projected expense before you adopt this cat. Pets deserve a owner willing and able to pony up the bucks to take proper care of it. If not then it is the pet that in the end that will pay the greatest price of unnecessary pain and illness.

well i know where I am the shelters offer a fee to adopt but includes getting the animal fixed and shots. If that can't work for you I would try looking for a pet that is already fixed. I would say 6 months is a good age for cats and dogs.

If you will keep an eye out in the paper or call around to the local vet's offices they sometimes run a special on spaying and duturing animals and you could get it done cheeper, but if the kitten is only 3 months, then you have some time yet before you have to worry about kittens.

The requirement for spay/neuter is for the animal to be atleast 2lbs, and 2 months old. Your kitten probably fits both, now.
You can contact local shelters/rescues, many have a low-cost spay/neuter program.

But in all truth, tell your husband to suck it up, because NOT neutering your cat, in the long run, can be MORE costly than the price of neutering him.

The age for when you should get animals is different for each species but I think it is 4 months or so for a cat. I think that animal rights groups have some free service but i can't think of one

They can be fixed safely at 8 weeks of age.

check in your city for a mobile vet, as the cost is much cheaper than going to a regular vet. my sister had her female cat fixed using the mobile vet. the cost was about $80. which included fixing the cat and all its shots and kitty pain pills.
