My sister and brother-in-law love to cook and about three christmas' ago, I purchased a set of Cut-co knives, the galley set plus six. They cost me around $500, and they really thanked me and they enjoy them a lot! If you don't want to spend that much, purchase something like a great set of cookware, not too eccentric but nice enough that they will get good use of them.

A great bottle of extra virgin olive oil. Depending on the type of cooking or baking, cookbooks and bake ware. A good set of cutlery--I would love everything and anything!

copper pot set. better love 'em a lot cuz that kinda gift is in the 4,000 dollar area. (any descent one anyway) Don't got that kinda money? tell him to make a five course menu, grocery bill on you. costs a good 250 for a good menu, but cheaper then the copper set.
still too much? wow, you're cheap! get 'em a damn "kiss the cook" apron then!
