Hiccups are caused by spasms of the diaphragm. If you are having them continually they can be caused by something stimulating or pressing on your phrenic nerve or by an electrolyte imbalance. So, if you really do mean excessive when you say how often you have them, see a doc. Antipsychotics and other medications can be used to help stop hiccups in cases when they will not stop on their own.

I have personally found that if you take a glass of water, light a match and throw it into the water and then drink the water, my hiccups always go away. I think it may have something to do with the sulphor smell from the match.
