But do bikers think about the people/children that they are startling and possibly endangering their lives and/or hearing?

According to UK law, exhaust silencers should be clearly marked 'For road use' - any others are probably illegal. But a lot of motorcyclists, especially teenagers on 'powered roller skates', buy noisy, illegal 'cans' and put them on their machines because in their minds noise equals power.
They are deluded, of course. In any case, a quiet machine that can accelerate swiftly and smoothly will _always_ be more impressive (and acceptable) than Joe Bloggs on his 250 cc machine sounding like an Isle of Man entrant (but actually creeping along!). Fortunately, there are definitely fewer really loud machines on the roads these days. And for those who say that noisy machines help the rider to be noted, well that is not really true since the noise _follows_ , not _precedes_ the rider.... Lights, bright clothing and sticking to speed limits is the way to avoid an accident - not noise.

That GROWL (foolish as it may sound) is part and parcel of what biking is.At times I wish I could switch off the GROWL and roll along quietly. However if one is watching others drive by with that god awful roar and that pleased grin or smug look, you have other thoughts about them, until you step on your own again and that wicked grin invades your face once more.

Get 4 wheelers to quit running over them! I am a female motorcyclist, and believed for a long time that loud pipes are obnoxious. When I started dating my husband, (a Harley rider), I became aware of the fact that a lot more heads turn when we ride together. Trust me, it isn't that his bike is prettier than mine, or that he is better looking than me! The difference is that people HEARD him. His pipes are stock, and they make a huge difference. If people driving cars are aware of your presence, they are less likely to hurt or possibly kill you. Famous last words..."officer, I never saw him". Maybe we can make sure we are heard.

Loud pipes save lives. If more drivers were aware of their surroundings then loud pipes wouldn't be necessary.
