Thinking of starting a new aetheists following (can't say religion 'cos it's not)... and the following are the ten commandments... your opinion of them and additional/replacement ones please..
1. Thou shalt have no god
2. Thou shalt forgive the god botherers as they think they know better... We'll see who has the last word :)
3. Thou shalt not bait the god botherers as it's an unfair competition
4. Thou shalt require physical scientific evidence of any god and not a list of quotes from a religious book
5. Thos shalt not sh4g your neigbours missus/hubby unless they approve
6. Thou shalt not nick thy neighbours stuff... cos he may be bigger than you and an expert martial artist!
7. Thou shalt not kill... unless it's in self defence when the neighbour is practicing his martial arts on you
8. Thou shalt not take anyones name in vein... unless it is bloody funny
9. Thou shalt not refuse the offer of a swift pint
10. Thou shalt not work on any public holidays

That's how all the other religions started. Next you'll decide that you created the universe and that we should bow down and adore you.

If your gonna create something for Atheism at least don't copy the concept of the 10 commandments from religion and 5,6,&7 which are merely the same but rephrased.

I think 5 should be a little reformed:
5. Thos shalt not sh4g your neigbours missus/hubby unless they (the sh4gged's partener AND the sh4gged) approve
Good stuff! Though now theyll think you're being serious and say how immoral it all is... zzzzzzzz....

i think if you changed one and two into "thou shalt have or not have any Gods, its up to you"
then you could start a new religion,, or belief if you didnt want to call it a religion,,,,,, and your question does bring up a good point,,,,, the last major religions were formed a long time ago, is it time for a new one? perhaps based on what we all have learned from the old ones, both positive and negative

why would an atheist bother with commandments?

surely the law is the only set of rules that need apply? I am under the impression that the ten commandments are like a pact you honour with God to get into heaven. What would an atheists commandments possible acheive?

I think those commandments should be followed by American and British army interrogators, less people would be in jail for no reason. But personally I think God would happily agree with this. As for the Republican party, what makes you think the Democrats are any different? And Theists - It says supplement, not replace.

I Got Yawl some better Ones!
1. Each morning upon rising, and each evening before sleeping, give thanks for the life within you and for all life, for the good things the Creator has given you and for the opportunity to grow a little more each day. Consider your thoughts and actions of the past day and seek for the courage and strength to be a better person. Seek for the things that will benefit others (everyone).

2. Respect. Respect means "To feel or show honor or esteem for someone or something; to consider the well being of, or to treat someone or something with deference or courtesy". Showing respect is a basic law of life.

3. Once a council has decided something in unity, respect demands that no one speak secretly against what has been decided. If the council has made an error, that error will become apparent to everyone in its own time.

4. Be truthful at all times, and under all conditions.

5. Always treat your guests with honor and consideration. Give of your best food, your best blankets, the best part of your house, and your best service to your guests.

6. The hurt of one is the hurt of all; the honor of one is the honor of all.

7. Receive strangers and outsiders with a loving heart and as members of the human family.

8. All the races and tribes in the world are like the different colored flowers of one meadow. All are beautiful. As children of the Creator they must all be respected.

9. To serve others, to be of some use to family, community, nation, and the world is one of the main purposes for which human beings have been created. Do not fill yourself with your own affairs and forget you’re most important talks. True happiness comes only to those who dedicate their lives to the service of others.

10. Observe moderation and balance in all things.

11. Know those things that lead to your well-being, and those things that lead to your destruction.

12. Listen to and follow the guidance given to your heart. Expect guidance to come in many forms; in prayer, in dreams, in times of quiet solitude, and in the words and deeds of wise Elders and friends.

Waho!!!

Number 1 won't work, because atheists do have a god.
The magical god of 'matter' with which they imbue all the creative powers and qualities usually attributed to a supernatural God.
