Basenji's are known for not barking much or making much noise, and they are relatively small dogs. But, they are basically big dogs in a small body so if they are being kept in an apartment they need to be taken out a lot to run and play. If you're a runner you could take one on runs with you and that would be sufficient, otherwise it would need to go the the dog park a couple times a week at least. Also, basenji's are known for not getting along with other types of animals like cats, and they vary on whether they get along with children.
FYI, typically, the smaller the dog, the more barking and yapping it will do. The larger the dog, the louder it will be when it does bark. And hounds tend to bark less, but when they smell or see something, they will howl really loud.

I'd look for small calm dogs and as soon as you bring them home start working on manners and a good obedience training program. There are lots of great adult dogs at shelters whose temperments are already pretty well formed and you can get an idea of thier behavior. If they are calm during the mayhem at the shelter they're more likely to be calm at your house. There are also the battery operated collars that give them a jolt when they bark, but be sure to get a high quality one. I had a friend whos dog would get shocked when the neighbors dog barked. No fun for the dog!
Best wishes!

A basenji does bark, but it is a "quiet" sound. An akita rarely barks, but they are big one-person guard dogs and not the best choice for apartment living.

There is no dog that's not going to bark at one time or another. that's what dogs are meant to do. If you want a dog get a toy dog of some kind. My toy poodle wasn't to bad with the barking and he only weighed 7 pounds. But he still barked but not like some.

All dogs bark. Your behaviour when they do conditions them to bark more or less. Never give the dog attention for barking and give treats when they are quiet and calm....never when they are barking. Guard dog breeds bark more but even these will bark less if not rewarded with attention or food. If the dog still barks more than you can stand get a collar that give small electric shock when barking happens.

The Basenji doesn't bark.
Plus, with proper training, most dogs will not bark a lot.

I have a French Bulldog and I couldnt ask for anything better. I also live in an apartment. The only thing is that they are a bit pricey. I paid 2500.00 for mine....but she is worth every penny. I love her to death and I consider her my friend!! Kinda wierd, huh? They are very adaptable in living situations and also fairly small. Mine is 20 pounds full grown. They are precious!!! And quiet!

Basenji's dont bark like the conventional dog. However, they do howl. They are excellent apt dogs.
