When someone opens their car door into mine and causes a dent, I would like to have them pay for it. Should I just take their insurance info or license # down? Will their insurance even pay for the damages if the cars are not moving and do I need to call police to get a report filed? I just bought a nice car and, judging from previous experience, it is not a matter of if this will happen but when this happens again.

You need to get their insurance details.

Justhaving a license number is no proof it was actually them that did it

Don't bother taking down any information or calling the cops, they won't even come to check this out in many places.
Best thing to do is open your door into them and at least get revenge.

Or you could do what I do, park 1/8 mile from the nearest car in the lot. I have several vehicles with no door dings.

Step #1) whine, cry and bit*h about a ding in your precious car.
Step #2) ask the bozo who opened the door to pay for repairs.
Step #3) if he/she tells you to pi$$ up a rope, chalk it up to a life lesson, contact the 'Dent Doctor' and park next to the highway from now on.

i have a club you can borrow if you like. seriously take down her tags, the make and model of the car and call the police. if you saw her/him do it then they can deny all you want. show them the proof. get their name if you can. but i doubt they will it to you.
