Is the spiritual gift of speaking in tongues still in use? I know people use it incorrectly a lot today. 1 Corinthians 14: 27 and 28 says "if anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God." it's not supposed to be a big yammer fest (1 corinthians 4:23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[g] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?) there is an orderly way to do it. but someone told me that the spiritual gifts of healing, miracles, and tongues and interpretation of tongues are not still in use. I am confused because the bible says all spiritual gifts will be abolished when Christ returns...not before. if anyone can shed some light on this for me I would appreciate it. please back up what you say with Scripture...thank you!

Go to any large Pentecostal church on any given Sunday, large women in the floor, amongst others. BIG HAIR sweaty and stringing down into plumb red faces. Several of the same people are weekly inspired to speak, others never, or only after they have been urged to repent, repent, repent (they like to say it 3 times), and then speak, speak, speak. If this isn't action enough for you, then attend a revival meeting, in a large tent in the south, if possible. Whoa, then you see some tongues being spoken.

to answer your question. Yes it is use today. But not in the way a lot of people think. Speaking in tongue is talking in a diffence lanuage.
So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[g] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? It because they don't understand what is being said.
Like in my church. I speak in English. But I have a helper who speaks in Spanish. SO you would say he is speaking in tongue.
1 Corinthians 14: 27 and 28 says "if anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.
I hope this help you out.

Well, a lot of responders quoted Scripture and Epistles for one argument or another. For myself, I can testify that the spiritual gifts are quite alive and functional today in the body of Christ. I received this power myself at age 15 very strongly, though I had felt the presence and power of the Holy Spirit of God before. But I had an experience and further subsequent experiences of spending time under the power of the Holy Spirit. This power was so significant, it subdued my body, mind and spirit - all were wrapped up in His arms as it were in His strong presence.
At that time I received great joy and a gift of tongues - a gift that has never left since that day and I use it often. It helps my prayer life and my faith walk. The fervent, effectual prayer avails much, and it is by the Holy Spirit's unction and gift of tongues that puts the "life" into my praying.
When I pray, I receive direction for prayer, words of wisdom and foreknowledge of future events. But most of all, by this gift, I have a deep intimacy with Christ and the Father. This latter reason I believe is the most significant reason to have the Gift of Tongues alive and well in the body of Believers.
No matter that you receive this gift or not, we are encouraged to seek the greater gifts: faith, hope, and love. The greatest of these is love.
God bless you.

I think God still shows people things (prophesy) and I think there are people who speak in tongues (languages) while under the influence of the Holy Spirit. The problem I have with your mother, from what you tell us, is that she brags about these things. Pride is a sin. And she sounds prideful or possibly she needs attention, I don't know. If she is reading your diary and watching you in church (when she should be focusing on worshiping God) then she is also wrong and manipulative. Speaking in tongues and prophesy/visions were some of the gifts of the Spirit Jesus promised we would have. Unfortunately, these things have been misused by people until they have a negative connotation for most people. But there are those with pure motives and hearts close to God who still have these gifts!! Thank God for that....((Hugs))

All of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are still in use today. There is a difference in using tongues as your personal prayer language [to pray, praise or worship God] and using tongues in the body [as in during a service]. During a corporate worship service, usually one speaks in tongues and one interprets [or sometimes one person does both]. You are correct that it is orderly and not chaos. When a group is having corporate prayer [everyone kind of praying and worshiping at once - not one person leading prayer] many people could be praying in tongues at once. That type of tongues is done to praise the Lord and edify the individual. The other type [one delivers message in tongues one interprets] is done for the edification of the body. You have the right scriptures. I worship in the Assemblies of God church. We are considered to be Pentecostal - this means we practice the gifts of the Holy Spirit as on the day of Pentecost [Acts chapter 2]. Hope this helps.

Yes, the 100 year anniversary of the Azusa street revival just happened this year. This is when the Holy Spirit moved on people to speak in tongues in America. Its real and still practiced by Assembly of God, Pentecostal Holiness, Pentecostal and some Non denominational churches today.

In 1 corinthians 4:23 , he was saying that if all did that, others would think we're insane, he didnt say we shouldnt do it.
also, The Holy Spirit does give us gifts like visions and healing, though not everyone gets it. Some are annointed with it, some are not.
initally i did not believe in it too, but when my leader prayed for the Holy Spirit to come into my life, i felt so strongly touched by His presence that i got moved to tears, though i was still like an unbeliever at that time!
Trust the Holy Spirit, try seeking with an open heart, and may God annoint you.

I agree with you, God is not the author of confusion, and he is certainly not behind the mayhem that we see in many "tongues" church services today. When Peter spoke in tongues at Pentecost, every man understood the message in their own language. It was a miracle for a practical purpose and as a sign to the Jews. I don't believe healing, tongues, etc are part of God's plan these days.

There are two types of speaking in tongues.
One is for personal worship, it is talking to God for your own edification. There is no interpreting it.
The second if a word from God and is to be interpreted by some one for the congregation to hear.
The first is to be used any time people are worshiping(the person has control over this gift I think), the second is to be used (I think can only be used when the
Spirit moves the person to speak) when directed.

The norm for the church is illustrated in the New Testament in the book of Acts. All the gifts and ministries are illustrated there. 1st Corinthians, as you pointed out, gives the order to the worship services in the church. Churches that deny that the gifts are still working are apostate in their doctrines according to those that exhibit them.
