The mouth is very sensitive, and yes, a lot of the scraping does hurt. Also, I think having to sit still and not move, plus not being able to talk while your mouth is being examined (and scraped) is scary. You wonder what will happen if something really hurts and you can't communicate what is wrong to the dentist.
And then there's the sound of the drills and the smells. when they have to drill teeth, or cut through the teeth or burn off anything, the smell is nauseating.
If you need novicaine, fear of needles comes into play.
There are so many unpleasant things to face at the dentist, that is why a lot of people are afraid. Unfortunately, the only way to avoid the fear is to go regularly so that you do not need the unpleasant work done and can get away with the simple scraping of plaque.

First of all nobody likes pain that I know and that's your biggest fear. My fear is the pain and then its the price! If you go to a dentist and do not feel that they are going to make you as comfortable as possible then go to another. Your best advice for going to a dentist is ask around and get other people's opinion on their dentists'. Some dentists are so kind and friendly your fear can be relieved. If I went to a dentist and they didn' t seem to care about my fear that would be the last time I went to them , there is too many dentists out there that strive to have you come back.

OMG - the dentist is so not my friend. Every time I go there, he hurts me. He sticks needles up the roof of my mouth and inserts sharp metal objects into cavities. Ouch! What's to like?

You are on a reclining chair with bright lights in your eyes, the anticipation that something is going to hurt you and the god awful sound of the drill puts you over the edge.

It's the anticipation of pain, a screw up, the scraping the drill. Even after you're in the chair you just wait, and wait, knowing something is going to happen. When it does, or feel that drill, you feel justified and even more apprehensive.

Because of two reasons in my book: They do not like getting injections in the mouth, nor hearing the drill while getting a tooth filled.
