Most of those rule aren't really accurate. If you are very active you will need to be drinking a lot more water than the average person, and if you live in a hot climate or are overweight you need to drink more too. If you go by half your body weight it should be in ounces, not glasses. If you are athletic and you want to go by that rule then you need to go by 2/3 your body weight in ounces. At first you might have to go a lot, but you will adjust. Don't let yourself get thirsty, that's a sign of dehydration.

I look at the 8 glasses rule as a minimum that you should drink. Try to get at least that, but more is better. Just don't try to drink it all at once. There is a condition known as hyperhydration (or water poisoning), which is caused by drinking too much water to quickly.
Basically, carry a water bottle with you and sip on it all day. You'll get all the water you need, and you won't need to worry about drinking it too fast.

The half your body weight rule is as baseless as the 8 8-oz glass rule. You might be interested to know that there is no scientific basis for that formula.
The half your body weight suggestion is fairly ridiculous, although it's repeated everywhere.
So a 400 pound person should drink 25 glasses of water a day? Too silly.

Yes, divide your weight in half and that is the amount of ounces of water per day to drink.
