They are very uncomfortable and sometimes hurt alot, depending on where you are in your cycle. Don't go right before your period. It's a good thing, esp if the radiologist reads the films correctly.

Other than the discomfort, being exposed to any radiation is not good. But I hear staying in the sun for long is more radiation than a quick mammogram.

I would say there is no disadvantage. It is an important procedure that can save lives.

Pain, yes, and I believe it may make people NOT get them done, which is a shame.
Cost can also be an issue for the uninsured.

but worst of all, they have discovered a different type of breast cancer that is more insidious, and doens't form visible tumors, and mammograms DON'T detect it. So it could also be a false sense of security.
