Check with a local vet. Many of them allow clients to put up posters of available animals. I assume your landlord allows pets & that there is ample room for a dog?

I'm from Houston, and I wouldn't trust a dog that's ''free'', due to the fact they probably aren't up to date on their shots, not fixed, and not well-trained.
Visit the SPCA, Staar, Pals, etc. The local shelters & rescues. You'll find the right dog there, for a fee, but a fee well worth the knowledge that the dog you are bringing home, is healthy.

I would go to a local dog pound, or an animal shelter. They should have the perfect dog your looking for, and If you get from either, think about how you will give a great home to a dog that has been abused, or abandoned, That should make you feel good.

Your local SPCA is the best place to find a dog looking for a home. And I know there is one in houston you have a whole show dedicated to houston animal cops on animal planet.

You can adopt from the local humane society. The dogs aren't free, but you only pay a small adoption fee. Also, the Humane Society neuters or spays the dogs before you adopt them, and also updates their shots, so it's a pretty good deal.

Please try a local shelter instead. There will be a fee, but it normally includes up to date shots, licensing, some food and a spay/neuter when it comes time.
The costs of all these things if done on your own will far exceed the adoption fee you will have to pay...so even though it is $$ up front you will still be saving big time, and you will likely be saving a pup from "doggy death row."

Try Vet's offices. Call around and see what they may have. Oftentimes Vets get stuck with animals someone brings in and then leaves with them or they have people asking them to help them find a home for their dog.

rescue shelters, pound (I have seen people exchange pets before they walk into the shelter), newspaper, flyers posted. Not too many people give pets away for free, it may take you a longer time to find one.

She is now 2 1/2 years old and a pure bred, beautiful girl~~~~just way too energetic to be living in this apartment with just me. Go to petfinder.com Although most rescues and shelters do require a small adoption fee.
