I am severely allergic to cats, and try to avoid them. I have one problem, my grandmother has a cat. When I was there for Thanksgiving, I thought I was going to die!! I felt almost as though I was having an asthma attack, but I don't have asthma. My grandmother loves her cat. What can I do with out hurting her feelings, (and the Cat)?

Allergies can either get better or worse as you get older. I also have severe cat allergies, which triggers an asthma response. I have asthma only when I'm exposed to allergens; you could have the same situation. Alternately, you could be having an anaphylactic-type reaction. Either way, you need to see an allergist to determine the severity of your allergies and to determine a course of treatment. There are some very effective treatments available now.

Both asthma and anaphylaxis are life-threatening; neither are going to go away if you just pop an antihistamine prior to exposure. An antihistamine will decrease the severity of your reaction, but this isn't something to play around with.

Well, if they're 30 minutes away, that means that you're not going to be spending more then half a day with them at a time - so it could be worse. My (future) inlaws sound a lot like this but are several hours away, and I'm going to get stuck doing this routine for entire weekends at a time. Guess you'll just have to suck it up and make the best of it. But I wouldn't commit to going every year, there's no reason you should have to - you have other people in your lives afterall, and you are entitiled to a nice quiet year at home all alone once and awhile.

Take pantothenic acid 500 mg daily and Vitamin C 1 gram 4 times daily. Start before you arrive. If you get the runs, cut back on the Vitamin C. You may also want to take a good multivitamin to balance your B vitamins. Take it at a different time from the Pantothenic acid.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

all of the allergy medicine in the world can't help me when I visit my mom (who smokes constantly and also has 3 cats).

I look like a dork when I wear it, but the only way I am able to survive is by wearing a mask that filters out a lot of the allergens...

Take an allergy pill before going over. Try something like Claritin. It should help.
