I am going to say, "no" to your question. I am licensed in Nevada and you most definitely have to have a GED or diploma to GET YOUR LICENSE. Now, does that mean that you can't begin school and clock your hours? No way! In most states as long as you have either your GED or your high school diploma by the time you take your state boards you're OK! I am sure that there is a web site that you can get all that information on. I would search Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology. I am sure you can also find the number in the phone book under "State of Tennessee" sub-category "Board of Cosmetology". Don't let it stand in your way!! Start to clock your hours and worry about that later! You'll get it done! The beauty industry is a GREAT industry and it's calling you!!!!

People say GEDs and high school diplomas are the same, but they aren't. When employers look at resumes they see GED and think "screw up". It doesn't sound like you are a screw up so I will tell you the same thing my dad told me: It's not about the classes, it's about proving you can stick it out. I felt the exact same way as you ten years ago when I was a senior and I'm really glad I listened to my dad. I know you want to own your own business, but in order for that to happen you will have to work to earn the money and you will be able to demand a higher salary with a HS Diploma rather than a GED. Also, I would be leery of the online schools. Some aren't regulated and thus not accredited so the diploma doesn't count. You only have a semester and a month to graduation, it's not that long and in the end staying in HS will be less time consuming than getting a GED. Yes, the people are a bore. Try taking some duel credit classes at your local community college. That way you get to leave campus and earn college credits at the same time. It was the only thing to save my sanity during senior year.

you should check to see if they have job corps training centers in there area. You can take up a trade while working on getting your high school diploma or GED. DO NOT DISMISS either b/c you will need them in future, so think about the future not just the present!!!!

Why don't you go back to school and get those? Also, I am sure that if you surf the web, you will find schools that do not have these requirements.
