Perhaps the answer reflect, if nothing else, just bad manners, rapidly becoming common in R & S in spite of the efforts by Y!A to keep it free of it.

Just read the profile of 'fivetoze'.
India has atomic weapons because China and Pakistan have them. India has a robust 'No First Use' policy and has never used them to kill. The USA has already used them on Japan. Pakistan has never had a stable civilian elected government of any consequence.

The system of medicine practiced in India today is mostly based on Western system.

If the statement by 'fivetoez' regarding 90% of Indians living in "poverty and squalor" is true then they must do it rather than bomb the innocent like some in the world do.

Yes, "degrees and qualifications" are delibrately not recognised in the West to stop countries like India from making economic progress. The same people then go abroad and prove that they have it in them to exceed.

So glad 'Fivetoze' likes "chicken tikka masala". Perhaps in time he will be convinced of many other good things from this great land.

Thanks to 'Max K' for all that good information.

Just some observations....

"Takshila" or Taxilla is actually in what we now call Pakistan (I have been there and seen it). "India" or "Hind" is derived from the region around the Indus river just as "Hebrew" is derived from the region around the river Eber. The river Indus is now in "Pakistan".

India was never a united country and consisted of a group of kingdoms and only existed as an entity because of being conquered by the British.

India had the atomic bomb and tested it long before Pakistan.

I see nothing wrong with being an "Indian" or being an ethnic from that vast region that has a long and interesting history. We have to be careful about being "proud" though because it can often lead to arrogance and nationalism (eg the National Socialists in Germany in the 1930s).

People like 'Khan saheb', 'fivetoze' & 'Mister' have chosen to express anti-Indian feelings for reasons best known to themselves.
They could simply have ignored the question but chose not to.

These facts were given in a German magazine. What would they gain by publishing these facts?

The sign for infinity (the figure 8, sideways) too was suggested first by the Indian Mathematicians. It is snake shaped as the Hindus have always associated the snake with God. The Hindus have aways shown God, (Vishnu), resting on a snake, Sheshnag.

The University of Takshilla was destroyed by the invading Islamic hoards and is believed to have taken them the best part of six months to burn all the books in the vast libraries.
Lord Jesus is said to have received his early education here.

The Ayurveda system of medicines was forgotten firstly by Islamic rule and then the British Raj as neither understood it.
The present system is based on import of vastly expensive refined chemicals from the West. The same work can be done by naturally grown plants in India providing work and income for millions.

Dear Nick,
You have forgotten Yoga one of the most important aspect of Indian philosophy. Then the Vedas the oldest known religious literature written about 1500 BCE. The non dualistic and all embracing philosophy of Tantra. India is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. In modern times India has produced spiritual giants like Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Yogananda Paramhansa and Osho Rajneesh who all preached a philosophy of life that transcends race, religion and creed. Mahatama Gandhi who's creed of non-violence is unparalled in any struggle of national independence.

Nope, I'm not proud to be an Indian, chiefly because I'm not an Indian!

And this is all a bit pointless, surely, you could pick lots of nations and come up with a bullet list of outstanding things things they achieved at some point or other in history? What's the point?

who are you deluding us or yourself, what about pakistan? or dont they count...

if theyre so peaceful why do they have nuclear weapons?
if theyve been practiciing medicine for so long how come child deaths are in the hundreds of thousands...

if theyre so educated, how come poverty and squalor are the defining parameters for 90% of the population...

and how come so many of them come to our western universities... maybe its because our degrees and qualifications are actually worth something in the real world.

the best thing to come out of india is chicken tikka masala... and that was developed in bradford.. england... not bradford PA the home of the zippo company.
