But today going to Mecca has got another goal for most of the people ; could be material or selfish reasons .

It is considered the holiest place for Moslems. It is imperative that anyone who can afford to go to Mecca do their pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime in order for them to accomplish the five pillars of the Muslim faith.

Google the term "five pillars". Similar to "commandments" for Christians. It is the last of their five pillars.
