It will vary from person to person. Most people are swollen and in a bit of pain anywhere from 3-14 days. So give your body some time. Try to avoid playing with the jewelry a lot, this can also cause excess pain.
Keep the piercing clean and take Mortin or an OTC noninflammatory/pain reliever. If you are worried something is wrong, see a piercer.

From personal experience-the pain will probably go away in about 5-7 days, but you might still have problems chewing and such for a bit longer. Stick to yogurts, puddings, ice creams-that sort of food consistancy. If you're dying for solid food place really tiny pieces on the back of your molars and chew carefully. I found the sucking on ice trick to be more uncomfortable (too cold) than helpful. Gargle with a water and mouthwash mix once or twice a day. (Two parts water to one part mouthwash if it's strong like Listerene.) Make sure you go back to your piercer to get a shorter tongue ring once the swelling has subsided-that will reduce your risk of chipping teeth ten fold and making talking much easier. It will take a while before you can comfortably do things like pick food out of your teeth with your tongue but practice saying "Silly snakes snack at seven!" and you'll sound normal in no time! Good luck!

When I had mine pierced, it was incredibly swollen and hurt like hell for about a week. I sucked on a lot of ice cubes and that seemed to help a lot. It will eventually get better. Just continue gargling as well to make sure food and germs don't get in there. Every person heals differently, so don't go by what one or two peoplve have told you. If it still hurts and is swollen after two weeks or so, it might be infected, so keep an eye out.

Everyone is different so this is a hard question to answer.
Ice chips helped me, I've had my tongue pierced twice. I bounced back after about 4 or 5 days.
Also, cut your food up into small pieces and put it in the side of your mouth to cut down on the chances of biting your tongue while its swollen. Ibuprofin will help reduce swelling if you can swallow it, if not, try getting some children's cold medicine and taking that. Since its in liquid form, it will go down easier than pills. Good luck!

It all depends on what you're trying to eat and if you are rinsing with mouthwash like you should. Personally...I ate Ice Cream for 3 days and it kept the swelling to a min. and the pain itself lasted about a week or so. It takes awhile to get used to it even being there(not biting on it,gaging on it, etc.) Just give it time and rinse with mouthwash to keep infection away(after you eat, after you drink, after cig, etc) and it'll be fine.
Hope this helps and good luck!

the annoying pain like 3 days-- drink lots of water and suck on ice or eat some. In about a week to week in a half you'll be all good. Just make sure to clean properly DAILY and no oral sex of any kind for a while... good luck.

Oh to remember the pain. I had a horrible time with my healing. First off if they still make you use Listerine, dump half the bottle out and fill the rest with water. Still gets clean but doesn't kill your tongue as much. Also make Slurpee's your best friend, and don't play with it so much. Just let your mouth do what it naturally does

There is no rule here, my piercing took a week to heal completely and it was sore for about 4 days.
Make sure to brush your teeth immediately after every meal and use plenty of mouthrinse to avoid infection - it can be nasty.

Mine hurt for about a week, after that it was still slightly sore, I just had to be careful of what I ate.
Avoid eating anything that is going to cause you pain. Stick to softer foods for a bit. The better you take care of it, the sooner it will feel better :)
