I was told a few years ago by a busy-body that this was the reason someone very dear to me had died. I felt she was gossiping more than passing information, though I couldn't for the life of me figure out why she would say it, since this incident happened 21 years ago. Isn't the brainstem too deep inside the head for that, and wouldn't a doctor know better then to do so?

I've worked as a nurse in ER and ICU for several years and yes we've had several accident victims, car wrecks, sports accidents ,ect. that had sustained injuries severe enough to sever their brainstems, also stroke victims whose brainstems were affected. So yes it is possible. I don't know the circumstances of your friend's incident. But it could happen.
Good luck I hope you can find out the truth for your peace of mind.

It is possible to sever the brainstem - which many would refer to as a fracture - but this is not easily accomplished. Serious injury to the brainstem - even without being severed - would interrupt normal input to the heart and lungs and this may have bee the cause of death. If you asked me to sever a person's brainstem - despite 30 years in medicine - I would have no idea how to do that. Television and movie pictures - twisting a person's neck followed by a sudden and quick death - is not really real. If you have more information please send it to me. 21 yrs ago is a long time ago and information may no longer be available.
