Nuns have been around for a couple thousand years, and back then there was absolutely nothing unusual about their dress at all. If you stop to think about it, even 100 years ago, their manner of dress would not have been too terribly different from mainstream society. It used to be common place for women to practice modesty and decency - especially out in public. Nowadays, modesty is incredibly odd. It's important to understand the role of a nun. She takes vows - much like a marriage vow - to serve God, the Church, and the sinner. The last thing a nun would want to do is to dress in such a way as to encourage a man to lust. She may be beautiful, she may be incredibly well built; however, her desire (unlike many women) is to enkindled the goodness of man - NOT to enkindle the sexual desires of man. While there is not a specific divine commandment in the bible that states "Nuns shalt not wear halter tops", there are plenty of divine commandments concerning proper dress, proper action, and proper speech. Many of us these days find propiety to be quite strange...sadly.

You are mistaken. Not all the nuns wear habits
it depends only on the Order at which each of them belongs.
There are Orders which nuns wear long black habits.....another are white short habits, and i know nuns that if you see them in the street, you'll never think that they are nuns. They dont wear habit at all. They dress in a simple way, but with the same clothes any simple woman would wear.
Also, i knew a nun in the argentinian Patagonia that lived among the indians, that wears pants.. Is that bad??? I dont think so

Actually, nuns' habits were, originally, not all that much different from the clothes typically worn by poor women at one time.
But as women's fashions changed, nuns' habits stayed essentially the same.
Christ commissioned the Catholic Church with the authority to establish practices such as nuns wearing habits. That commissioning is clearly mentioned in the Bible.

Corinthians 11:6 "For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head."
This is why I believe nuns wear a veil. I guess same reason muslim women do.

Unfortunately, most people are miseducated when it comes to muslim women. American media love to highlight the atrocities of the Taliban, and one of those horrible acts is forcing their women to wear all-encompasing robes and head coverings. Therefore, most people assume that ALL women wearing similar outfits are from cultures that want to oppress them. Therefore the conclusion that is eventually made is that muslim people want to oppress their women.

all 3 major monothestic religiouns require women to dress modestly.. (just these modern times, some one decided to disobey Gods words) having said this... Nuns dress like this to preserve their modesty and keep their chastity so as not to be looked upon by men.. (sort of why muslim women do also)

Probably comes from the Middle Eastern culture. All people out there wore it, but mostly for protection from the sun and wind whipped sands.
You do notice the Pope wears a scull cap that looks very Jewish.
