How bizarre - presumably this is your gp that has given you this rather poor information?
What you need to do is have your blood taken and your creatinine level checked. Your creatinine should be at around 100. If it is higher than 150 then you will need a referral to see a nephrologist who can organise for a GFR test which will show the exact amount of kidney funciton you have.
To say that someone has the kidney of an 80 year old is a load of old rubbish. You need to know exactly what percentage of function you have. What has caused any decline in function and what you can expect.

It might be helpful for you to know that many people can survive their whole lives very happily on just one kidney. I spent most of my childhood and teenage years with only 30% kidney function and lived a pretty normal life. It's also worth knowing that often when a kidney is damaged then it's function will continue to decline slowly over the years. Healthcare for kidney patients is much improved from the old days. There is a choice of dialysis - haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis - but it might be that you'll never even need either of these treatments.

If your kidneys are failing then it's likely that you would feel noticeably tired and sleep more. When there is very little function left then you would start to feel very sick.

I'm not very impressed with what your doctor has said. He's given you a really inarticulate diagnosis and not provided you with any of the information you might need.

Kidney function 'normally' declines at about 1% per year above age 30 as reflected in a still 'normal' creatinine despite declining function - I assume that this is the basis of your being told that you have the kidneys of an 80 year old or stated another way about a 50% reduction in kidney function. Even medications metabolized by the kidney do not generally require a dosing adjustment with 50% of fuction. It is not possible to say what happended although your doctor should know and they should have told you. Liver function better is kidney function improving?

I'm just wondering if it would be wise for you to see a specialist who will know more in this area and give u a better idea of whats been happening. 'Cos im taking it as though when you had hepititus u were given medication? This is supposed to make u and ur kidneys, liver etc better, not worse. I can't figure this one out but to be honest, i'd go and ask your doctor whats going on because if your kidneys are as old now as you say they are then you need more treatment to either make them completely better if it is at all possible. Seek more advice asap as this seems to me quite serious.

Get checked for Hepititus again, Have you been in contact with someone with the same symptoms with an open wound? I suggest you go back to your doctor right away you can never be too sure of what this is. Good luck honey.

I suppose the hepatitis would have damaged your kidneys quite a bit. Ask your doctor to recommend a dietician who can guide you in eating what is best to protect your kidneys.
Pain like that is an awful thing to live with.
I hope your health improves soon.

Your doctor really has the best chance of correctly informing you about what has happened to your kidneys. Best wishes for your health.

excessive alchoo, and insuffiecient water.

You can turn it around - cut down, WAY DOWN, on the alcohol and drink 3-4 pints of water.

water does cure a multitude of ills
