Grid positional system.... im presuming you know what it actually is, but just didn't know what it stood for... if not, then its a satellite tracking device that uses 3 or more (up to 14) satellites to locate and pinpoint your position. used in can navigation, hill walking / out door etc and trackers in security vehicles etc...

hope this is what you meant?

.....................................................................................................

it is grid, not global, because the Number readout on most (apart from the in car navigation ones...) give you a "grid Reference"... a 12 fig grid, which is accurate to 10cm square on the ground..... the first two letters that it gives you are the map reference, and that tells you whch map you are on, before you start useing the Numbers....

GPS, short for Global Positioning System, uses a constellation of more than two dozen GPS satellites broadcasting precise timing signals by radio to allow GPS receiver to accurately determine its location (longitude, latitude, & altitude) in any weather, day or night, anywhere on Earth. It has become a vital global utility, indispensable for modern navigation on land, sea, & air around the world, as well as an important tool map-making & land surveying.

You need to make good investigation before you buying new GPS first. About the price, the brand, and the quality. In addition, check if the function satisfy your need or not. For example it's better for you to have bluetooth, dual zone function, or Ipod, or can play DVD? Then you can fine a good GPS.

It stands for Global Positioning System because is can be used world-wide. See the link for in-depth details. It may help you with converting the GPS, but I don't think so. Sorry.
