...to say that, because you believe Jesus will return in the next few years, we shouldn't plan too far into the future?

I've seen several posters here imply this more than once, but there are a few here, just for an example: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ahl5LTX2Kgk5_S.3K7HoWVvzy6IX?qid=20061127072040AA1kZgx

Personally, I can see many huge, huge problems that could come of this. Saying "Eh, we don't have to worry about long terms plans to help the homeless or stop wars. Jesus will be here in a little while, just wait and let him clean it up."

After all, what if you're wrong?

The Bible says no man knows the day or hour in which the Son of Man will return. Anyone who says they know is either a fool or a liar or perhaps both.

As Christians we should live our lives as if Christ will return at any moment. But this does not mean we should just give up on everything assuming He will return tomorrow. Instead we should tell others about the Good News of Christ and what He has to offer to the world. Actions speak louder than words.

Anybody that says no long plans into the future is a fool. Who told the person when Jesus is coming, and how many years is few years to the understanding of that person? In heaven there is no nights to separate the days so no counting of years, from the day heaven was created till now is still a day for there has not being night yet to count another day, if Jesus had said he is coming next year, we should be expecting that to be when the heavens are able to rotate over the sun to make a day and done that for 365 days, by then none of us that live today and our tenth generations will by on this earth planet, Jesus comes everyday and each day he takes people, we have been seen people die in so many ways and anybody who is dead has met his Jesus. Then should we stop thinking about future because of the fact that we don’t know when we are going to die? That’s not proper. We keep on thinking and also make sure we find the right way to approach our GOD individually for that’s the only way we are safe. I don’t care what any religion says and poor you if you don’t believe in any religion, God is real religions are not but then we need to belong somewhere to be able and find our creator.

As a Christian, I am still saving and still planning for my family's future. I do feel this creates huge problems in thinking that the world is going to end in a few years. The fact is none of us knows. You never know when you are going to die or how long you are going to live so I take responsibility in doing the best I can, I don't want Jesus cleaning up my mess, I want to already have my work done.

Every generation has thought they were living in the end times. Many times it is because we can't picture things getting any worse than they are now. Sometimes it is because they have bought into some false profit who is trying to mislead people. The Bible says that no man knows when Jesus will return so it is pointless to try and predict it. We need to live everyday like it is our last, but that does not mean we are to set aside our mission in life which is to bring glory to God and to fulfill His purpose for our life.

That is a very good point.
For the Christians that think they should just sit around and wait are wrong.I'm A Christian, and I've got A lot of things to do.No one knows when the lord will return, therefore they don't need to be stopping and waiting. They should be going about their daily lives just like everybody else.Christians should not be worrying about when or if he comes. They should be thinking about their own salvation and winning souls to the lord. The lord says to keep looking up,and always be ready. He did not say sit around and wait.

Sitting around and waiting makes for a poor child of God who worries about things they need not worry about.Their doing exactly what the devil wants them to.

This is what happens when you allow a religion to exist that has THE END OF THE WORLD as their stated and much anticipated goal for Humanity. All such religions (rubbish) must be marginalized, if not out-right destroyed, so that we can deal with the complex problems facing Humanity in a rational manner.

It's actually pretty par for the course for the way Christianity handles a lot of problems. They're taught to put everything in God's hands and let him deal with it. Which basically gives far too many of them the convenient excuse not to take personal responsibility for any of their actions. Mind you, I'm not saying ALL Christians run from their responsibilities to the planet and the rest of humankind, but many of them simply pass it off as something they pray to God about and that he will take care of. Of course when you believe that you're sheep and unable to do anything without your shepherd...

Bright blessings!

If nothing else--if one firmly believes that the coming of Jesus is any time now they should be doing what they can to share the message. But, from a realistic standpoint, it was 2000 years ago that Jesus said He would return and no where in the Bible does it say to be so 'heavenly minded that you are no earthly good'. Jesus isn't coming to 'clean up' the world--He is coming to destroy it and rebuild it.

You make a good point... I does seem evident that the Lord's return is near, and we are commanded to be watchful for His return. The other admonition of scripture though is to "occupy until I come"... meaning we need to be about the Lord's business, which includes short and longer term plans.
