They want to see what you made of. they will beat you, harass you, tell you that you'r worth nothing. at the end you will feel worthless. then they will build you up stronger then before.

It means they try to make you forget everything yo have ever learned from hanging out with your high school buddies and work buddies. Then they teach you that the only people you can rely on now is your fellow soldier. You no longer have a mom, dad or any other type of family. The military is your family. They are the ones you can rely on. They tell you about how in a "gang" the gang members say that they are your friend, but then they run off when you are about to get in trouble with something. but in the military you can rely on your buddy for backup in a fire fight. It's a lot more, too, but to go into depth would take days.

My husband has been in the army 8 yrs now... he said that they run you and you are always being taught and after 5 weeks of pure hell including the tiredness ..he was told that they would all get the weekend off so they could go out and enjoy themselves but 2 hours before they were due to leave for the weekend...they were personally told "No, your not going anywhere" and they had to accept it...they were not given a reason why and thats breaking them down. Once you sign that piece of paper you literally belong to the army and what they say goes.

Decades ago they could do worse than hit you. I saw a lot of people hit but I only came close one time. I was at parade rest with rifle and he pushed the barrel of the rifle at me very fast so to strike me in the face since my rifle was not exactly 180* off the horizontal plane. When I moved my head sideways very fast then the barrel only hit my shoulder. Since my reaction time was rapid then he moved on to another poor slob who had a dirty tee-shirt and then concentrated on the fool who was hiding in the dumpster.

It depends on the situation now, when we are at peace time, they do that so it can get rid of your ego which can lead you to do rash things on the battle field, and put yourself and your men in danger. They make you lose your free will, practically and turn you into a killing machine that will follow orders with 110% efficiency.

They make everyone the same....ie haircuts. uniforms. They make every individual the exact same looks wise. They teach you that everything now is a group effort.

The idea is to make you a better person.
Thank you very much, while you're up.

all military personnel must be "broken" down which means to take away all sources in their personality that often hinder outright discipline.

They break you down physically and mentally by exhausting you. When you're incredibly tired and stressed, it makes you easier to mold and form.
