My work would like to either give Christmas gifts to a family in a Canadian shelter or send gifts to an orphanage over seas. Does anyone know of a program for this?

Thank you.

I am a foster parent. These kids get a set amount of money for Christmas, one thing I NEVER do is spend the exact amount if I did these kids would have very little. People are always donating money and gifts. I feel if you can make one child happy it is worth it. Ionce bought a kid a cd walkman for his birthday the expression on his face made me cry. It was something so simple that did it and it meant so much to him.
The second link is where you can make a donations it is also on the site of the first link. Thank you in advance if you decide on the site I gave you!

The Salvation Army has an Adopt a Family Program

Also, try your local shelters, social services and churches. They should have information for you. Local Legions usually run a christmas campaign, and often schools are involved with an adopt-a-family campaign. Human Resources and Employment will likely know of a christmas campaign in your area. But for something out of Canada, I would look at organizations like World Vision. In our community, the women's emergency shelter sends out a letter each year to local businesses asking for their support. Sometimes Grocery stores will also take part in a christmas campaign, and often you see Christmas trees in malls where you can adopt a child or family.....
good luck!

There are plenty of places to get information from. There are women's shelters, your church, your school, your volunteer organization, look under charities in the yellow pages, do a search on the internet, even here in yahoo groups there are plenty of people who try to help others:

Even on yahoo groups under "angels":

There is a great man in our neck of the woods who gathers gifts each year (last year's was the "shoebox of hope" in which our school brought in shoeboxes full of dollar store items and things we didn't need from around the house etc. and gathered them from all around the city, got onto a ship with them all and took them to poor children in Guatemala...who had never seen the likes of such things...imagine their wonder to see hundreds and hundreds of beautifully wrapped boxes arrive...I was humbled to see them piled in our school so imagine them?

Your newspaper likely knows of such people too so you may write them and see what they have to say. But often than not I think you will find info on the internet if you use your imagination and search the right key words.

Why not call the cancer ward of your sick kids hospital and ask them if there is a family in need there. Ronald McDonald house usually provides a home for families to stay at while their children are getting chemo and other treatment. These families lives are have been turned upside down and could use your help big time.

Call the local children's aid society of children and family service agency of the commuty you woudl like to share with. They have terrific ways in helping out a family. Coats for kids, baskets of food, unwrapped new toys... many many ways to make a family have a terrific x-mas.
