There are many things that can cause lactose intolerance. You can treat by slowly incorporating lactose foods and drinkss into your diet. I was suddenly lactose intolerant a few months ago. The doc gave me some probiotics (Flora Q) to help balance the bacteria in my stomach. Now I can eat ice cream again whoopee.

You can become lactose intolerent by an injury to the small intestine and the body will produce less lactase, or it can be passed down in genes.

I don't know how it can be treated, but my father is lactose intolerant and cannot eat bread, cheese, milk ect.

You can also check out this website, it has answers for both parts of your quesion.

Lactose intolerance may be congenital or acquired, primary or secondary. Congenital is due to lack of lactase enzyme since birth. It is very rare. Acquired usually occurs after the age of 3 years or so. It is less common in Caucasians, more common in Asians. Secondary lactose intolerance may occur temporarily after a gut infection, such as due to rota virus in infants. Treatment is by giving lactase enzyme with dairy products. In infants, a lactose -free milk is given, such as soya milk.

The lack of LACTASE enzyme in the gut.

This can be treated several ways, but the least invasive and most "natural" is to slowly increase your intake of yogurt each day, starting off with a teaspoon or so.

You can also purchase "probiotics" which are live cultures of bacteria that will bust up the lactose for you. You can get these at most natural food stores. They don't tend to be cheap, though.

Ever tried Kefir? Its a german product that tastes like a yogurt smoothie and it has the probiotics in it (acidophilus and bifidus mostly).

Check that out.

Lactose intolerance usually reveals itself as diarrhea. Prevacid does not just treat the symptoms. It actually decreases the amount of acid released in the stomach which decreases the amount that goes up the esophagus. Raising the head of the bed does help some in acid reflux. Watching the type of food that causes the most problems and avoiding it also helps. Nerves are involved in acid reflux. Releive stress.
