Muslims consider Christ a prophet, yet Mohammed didn't come on the scene until a few hundred years after Christ did. It doesn't seem reasonable to me that Mohammed would be solely responsible for Christ's exalted position in Islam - so the first people who became Muslim must already have thought quite highly of Christ, which implies to me that the first Muslims were converts from Christianity.

Anyone know the history? Looking for sober answers, not vitriol or bile.

Thanks.

Why do you think that jesus's high position in islam is because of human beings?
Islam is a divinie revelation and comes from God, therefore the exalted position of jesus in Islam is because jesus was sent to mankind as a prophet just like Muhammed was. Jesus was a prophet of God and when God revealed to Muhammed (PBUH) the new religion He obviously would have told him about the prophets of yester years.
As a result Muslims believe in all the prophets whether they are from the Christian or Jewish faiths. We believe that Islam is the continuation of Christianity and Judaism and so we believe in their prophets and holy books. It has nothing to do with new converts being christians.
in fact this is not true. At the time that the revelation was sent to Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) the majority of Arabia worshipped idols. In fact the very first muslims all were idol worshippers, except maybe for Salman al-Farsi who was Christian and others who cam from outside of Arabia. But I believe that they were few in numbers at the beginning.

According to Christianity, Jesus is God in the flesh, and therefore the creator of Muhammed and everything else. However, Christianity comes from Judaism, which is linked back to Abraham, the father of Isaac and Ishmael. Ishmael represents people attempting to fulfill God's will through works, while Isaac, the father of Israel, represents God fulfilling His own will by keeping His promises. Muhammed turned the focus on Ishmael, and subsequently away from God and onto man. Muhammed denies that Jesus died on the cross, and that totally destroys the basis for Christianity, because that was the way God redeemed all people from the curse of sin and death. If Christ did not die on the cross, then we can't look to His atoning sacrifice for the payment of our sin. So, while it looks on the surface as though Islam reveres Jesus Christ, the fact is they bring Him down from His position as the supreme sacrifice and example of God's perfect love for us and relegate Him to a secondary position behind Muhammed. The two religions are mutually exclusive.

there are many prophet before Jesus(pbuh) and Muhammad..all of them have been given a holy book which was created by Allah..same as to Jesus..God gave him Bible..at the time after Jesus..many of his follower became misguided and the Bible being corrupted and altered to suit their lifestyle..so Allah created another Holybook that is Quran, which was given to Prophet Muhammad. Quran is the most perfect holy book and its the last book from Allah..its the final revelation from God's will and teaching to the world..

The first person who embraced Islam was Khadija Khuwailid. She is the 1st wife of Prophet Muhammad. and she was not a Christian and she came from the Quraish.

They consider Christ ,Virgin born but not the son of God(Go figure that one) They also don't believe he was crucified, that someone else was substituted at the last minute(Go figure that one too). They also consider the promises of Israel went to Ishmael,Abrahams other son by his slave girl Hagar(Also not true)and not Isaac as the Bible says.Mohammed came along 600 yrs after Christ.Allah was "El Allah" the Mooon God .Mohammed turned him into "GOD",if you don't believe it ,they will lift your head for you.

Muslims, Christians, and Jews came from the same line, Abraham. It's in the Christian bible showing how Abraham's two sons started the lines of these religions.
