You're actually asking two questions:

From the outside, what is the meaning of life? Answer is none. There is no outside viewpoint. We are not here for a purpose, we are the incidental result of evolution (note: incidental, not accidental -- accident implies random, we're a stochaistic result).

From the inside, what is the meaning of life? Whatever we choose to make meaningful. Some choose faith, some choose knowledge, some choose service, etc.

Life has no meaning except to become fully aware and conscience and self realized. Because it is easier to climb the highest peak and dive to the bottom of the ocean but very difficult to conquer one's passions. Because we are so cut off from our inner-self, that we always tend to look outwards for answers. We are always looking for some consolation some outward comfort, whether alcohol, drugs, sex, films, gardening, fishing, the list goes on. We cannot bear to be with ourselves!! Then we invent statements like "The meaning of Life", we start rationalizing, weaving theories, creating logic, inventing philosophies, engaging in highly intellectual debates. We look everywhere for answers except in the inner-self. We seek speech not silence. We fear silence. The present society has insulated us from living the way we were created to live, in harmony with nature and all other created beings.
This is my viewpoint and I could be mistaken. But this is what I feel.

without God life has very little meaning, so to know, love and serve God is the real meaning of life for to do so means that we will be happy with God forever.
