Was that my poor math at converting liters to gallons or is there a real difference?
If there is a real difference, why isn't the same grade of diesel available here? Thanks!
p.s. I get 42-45 mpg so I'm really not complaining. Just curious.

I had a similar experience. When I took my pet aardvark to Canada, he ate about 10% less. Canadian termites must rock as hard as Canadian diesel.

U.S. has switched to an extremely low sulphur diesel fuel that does not give as good of mileage. Canada probably still uses a higher sulphur fuel there and that could easily account for it. I know that my truck doesn't do as well on the super low sulphur fuel here in the states as it did on the older high sulphur stuff. Also as "winterizer" is added to the fuel to keep it from gelling in the cold temps both in the U.S. and Canada (and anywhere else it gets cold) Canada might be using a higher octane additive for this. This is done during the cold months in the U.S. automatically by the refiners and switches back to stronger fuel in the warm months.

3.78 litres to your gallon , we've been experimenting with low sulphur diesel for a while , maybe a colder blend is more volatile giving your little car better mileage ?

if the wheather was colder you will get better mpg, a golf has a intercooler for its turbo, the cooler the intercooler stays the better the performance fron the engine and the turbo

dunno about canada but US emission is tighter and that would effect mileage.

sulfur found in diesel is a lot lower in US than anywhere in the World. Sulfur is black stuff coming out tail pipe of diesel.
