Two things here you can do... 1--Stop the biting all together, 2--Reduce the pressure of the bite, eventually stopping it all together.

First of all, any time you engage in play with your dog, NEVER allow your hands to "be the toy" your dog "plays" with. You never want your dog to think it is okay to bit human skin.

To reduce the pressure of the bite-- When your dog bites you at all, let out a loud, high pitched "ow,ow,ow" or "ouch". This is what your dogs litter mates did to let her know a certain behavior she has done was painful. Your dog doesn't want to hurt you in play time, only needs to learn that our skin is more sensitive than a litter mates. When you do this, most dogs stop immediately. Then after a minute or two, may try again, so repeat this again each time. Eventually, after time and patience, your puppy will stop biting all together. This method may take longer to acheive than the next one.

To stop the biting immediately-- When your puppy bites at you, grab the puppy firm, but gently, by the scruff on the back of the neck, shake a little and at the same time, in a low growl sounding tone, say "No Bite". When your puppy relaxes while you are holding the scruff, you can then let go. The relaxing is a form of submission in the puppy. This is how momma dog disciplined your dog when she was still with the litter.

Never allow a biting incident to go unaddressed, not even once as it will send mixed signals and confuse your dog as to what is appropriate. Always be sure to offer proper toys during your play time and encourage your dog "bite" at this, rather than your hands.

With either of these methods, if your dog is very persistent, immediately stop the play session for about 15 minutes. Leave the room, ignore the dog. After the time has passed, you can then start over again with the play session and begin addressing the bite issue again.

This could take some time, patience and consistency to accomplish, so don't give up. We have a Border Collie puppy (BC's are notorious for nipping) and I used these methods combined and it worked really well and working out the urge to nip during play. These methods were suggested by both our trainer and our vet.

I would also consider some obedience training. A good trainer will be an invaluable resource for helping you get thru some of the bad habits dogs sometimes pick up.

You should take your dog to obedience classes.

When my dog would bite, I would yell "OUCH" and when my dog would stop biting, I would use the clicker and give her a treat. Then she associated the no biting with a treat. That's how I did it, with the clicking method and then a treat. Same thing when she pooped or peed outside, I would be right next to her and as soon as she was done pooping or peeing, I would click and give her a treat so she would associate poop and pee outside = treat. You learn all of this in obedience classed, but I would suggest you enroll in positive obedience classes (you never hit an animal for bad behavior ie putting his nose in his pee is not a positive reinforcement). Good luck!

I taught my now 4 month old Bichonpoo "no bite" whenever she would bite me I told her "no bite" in a firm (non yelling) voice and pulled my hand away. She quickly got to know what "no bite" meant and I know longer have a problem with her biting.
