My usual night consists of 'bolting up right' in bed feeling that i can't breath. Sometimes i will find myself standing in a room having bolted and can't remember how i got there? My symptoms are very scarey. My heart will be usually thumping in my chest and i have pains in my left arm with pins and needles. I used to suffer with this sleep disturbance a couple of times a year, but recently it is almost every night. I had quite a bad attack the other night, where the thumping of my heart did not sub-side and i seemed to not beable to get my pulse to slow down. It was nearly two hours before it slowed to a regular pace. Would like to know if anyone has any ideas what i could be suffering from??

You could be suffering from a condition called Night Terrors it is quite common, best check it out with your doctor to rule out any underlying problem.
Avoiding cheese, caffeine (Including tea!) and chocolate before bed can help too.

Good Luck!

Hi,this almost sounds like a panic attack in your sleep, I don't know if you would agree, but I would try some thing, because Right now anything is worth a try (right)! I would keep a brown PAPER bag next to the bed! This is for when you wake up and your heart is racing you place over mouth and nose, breath into the brown PAPER bag to recycle the air and start to calm your breathing down.IS there something troubling you? IS there something you are worried about,DO you have a recurring nightmare?
I find by putting a little lavender on my pillow this relaxes me, also I use a relaxation CD, they are cheap and you can get them from most place's now a day's, also I use ear plug's, not only does my husband snore BUT I found I could hear myself breath in and out my body's own rhythm and that is very comforting.
and DO NOT watch the news before going to bed, that is the worst as your mind will process the last thing it See's-- in your dreams.

well I hope some of this has helped, good luck!
kind regards Cat.

I get this. It is scary isn't it. I know that with me it is due to stress and anxiety. I don't get the pains and pins and needles in my arm and if I were you I would get that checked out asap. It may well be a bad phase you are going through and that things will sort themselves out in due course. Unfortunately I find that alcohol makes my condition worse. It helps me relax in the evening, but I get much worse heart pounding in the night if I've had a few glasses of wine.

you really need to talk to the proffesionals on this one, it could be a lot of things, physically or mentally. sleep disturbances are very common, night terrors are the most awful of all but usually children suffer from them, however it does sound farmiliar having experienced these with my littleuns. you wake up heart racing, sweating and shaking with fear, yet you cant remember why. sleep is a funny thing, it may be that you had terrors but simply cant remember them. if you are really worried dont fret to go to your doctor and tell he or she everything, they will be able to determine if its anything other than night terrors and can prescribe you with something to settle your sleep
good luck and try to sleep well
