There is no problem if installations stops in the middle. You can install XP as a seperate OS or u can upgrade win98 to XP.
Just check out if you have the system requirements for installation of XP.

Lot of hurdles you will have to face while upgrading to WinXP. First>Your system must meet the minimum requirement for running WinXP.
Second>You should have all the Hardware drivers for WinXP. Though, XP supports almost everything and has inbuilt drivers, but certain newer hardware, especially graphics drivers of NVIDIA/ATI creates problem. Better to check the CD that came with your motherboard or else download.
Third>Many of the loaded programs in Win98 will stop functioning or will show errors once you upgrade. They were made to run on Win98 and not on XP. So, you will also have to search for the XP version of that software if you love it a lot.
Fourth>Better to take backups. Wise men have backup plans.
Fifth>Booting from CD to run an upgrade requires a lot of knowledge about partitioning and options that are for the geeks. Better to run the XP CD setup from Win98 itself where you will get the option to UPGRADE or NEW INSTALL. Choose UPGRADE and you will be saved from a lot of options offered by Bill Gates. Always hate NTFS.
Best of luck. Bye.

You have 2 options, first you can make partition on your hard disk and install WinXp in a new drive and leave win 98 at old drive where it is. u ll have both the operating systems.
Second is u have to delete/format the drive where 98 is lying, and install Xp over it. If you have win XP cd wid u, than it ll guide you through all process very effectively.
No it wont hamper your win98 OS if you r installing win xp in some other drive. But on the same drive its logical that NO 2 operating system can be laid.
Hope u got your answers. If this doesn't solve ur query plz revert me back.

You need to check that your machine meets the system requirements of XP. It's generally best to format your machine and start over with a fresh install to avoid problems. If it crashes part way through then no your machine won't work but you can start it again. If your machine is rather old and doesn't meet the requirements then you'll need to upgrade components or get a new machine.

it could have maximum, if no longer all your drivers and could have each and every thing pre-put in once you first start up-up. homestead windows ninety 8 SE wasn't as solid on the setting up of mandatory drivers once you first loaded it. With homestead windows XP, I not often could bypass and seek for drivers on factors, merely the occasional webcam or MP3 participant. i propose against doing an improve as as against a clean deploy in case you are able to. Backup your information and do a clean deploy. (with your workstation, i'd purely bypass to Win2K myself, yet it particularly is merely me)
