I am assuming that you need a lawyer to represent you for criminal proceedings. IF so then when you go for your 72 hour hearing you will need to file an Indingency form stating that you can not afford a lawyer. IN order to do this you will have to be in MD. THe judge in AZ can only appoint a lawyer in AZ. Have the Lawyer in AZ try to send a letter to the court in MD stating that you are currently doing time in AZ.

If you are in jail in Az, the judge there can not appoint you a lawyer to represent you in Maryland until you are extradited to Maryland, also if you need an attorney and the court appoints you a public pretender you would be better off representing yourself, a court appointed Attorney is obligated to the state after all who is paying him? of course the state is there fore his job is to get you convicted, and don't you forget that,

You need to establish that you cannot afford one on your own. You do this via a judge or magistrate at your bond hearing. The judge or magistrate will ask you if you want a lawyer. The next question will be if you can afford one.

Before you go to court, you will get a lawyer from the public defender's office.

Didn't they read you your miranda rights? You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law, you have the right to an attorney, if you do not have an attorney the court will appoint you one...etc etc.
the court is OBLIGATED to appoint you a lawyer, it's the law.

If you need a lawyer in MD for non criminal case you may not be able to get a public defender.

If it is for a criminal case you have to tell the court that you can't get there & why you can't get there.
