No rays just sound, the machines used are sonograms they use sound waves to create a picture. Nothing harmful about that it's low frequency nothing you'd hear and nothing that would harm the mother or baby.

No rays... just sound waves. There have been some scattered studies showing that there might be some aggitation to the developing fetus with repeated use of ultrasound technology, but nothing definitive.

In other words... it's just sound waves being used... conducted through the fluid in the womb... that bounce off the baby's features much like an echo bounces off the walls of a canyon. No known harm, but in an uncomplicated pregnancy I'd say once to make sure the due date is accurate (at about 16 to 20 weeks) and then again near the end of pregnancy to check baby's position and renal function as well as overall development and size/weight/head circumference etc.

Sound waves, as in sonography. Traditionally, they have been thought of as safe, but with the emergence of the vanity sonographers cropping up, now the medical community has decided there *may* be danger to the fetal brain, if bombarded with sound waves frequently enough during gestation.

Personally, I think this *concern* has arisen due to the fact that it will impact their checkbooks, but hopefully scientific studies, not junk science, will make the final determination. A half dozen or so sonograms probably have no untoward effects on the fetus.

It is soundwaves and all research has pointed to it not being harmful to the baby....it is not radiation.

Almost all doctors do it at 18-22 weeks. Some doctors are beginning to also do it at 8 weeks to ensure the development of a fetus.

Special cases require more testing.
